A little over a month ago, Independiente’s Carlos Matheu was just moments away from making a move to Europe. He was then informed that in his physical they found a cardiac malformation and his transfer to Lokomotiv eventually fell through.
The Argentine defender was in coach Claudio Borghi’s plans for the Apertura tournament, he was even the starter for Independiente in their first two matches of the season. Then Cagliari came calling and he is close to a move to Italy according to Argentine sports daily Olé.
“The teams have already agreed to terms, all that is needed is a few signatures,” said Matheu in an Argentine radio show today. Independiente is scheduled to receive US$ 3 million for the transfer, yet Matheu will continue to train with his current team despite being hours away from flying across the pond to join his newest team.
“Lothar” Matheu, 23, made his debut in the Argentine first division back in 2004 and became a vital part of the Independiente defense when Pedro Troglio took over the team back in 2007. In that tournament he replaced an injured Leandro Gioda, thus becoming immovable in the Independiente backline.
